Awesome Dude Chasing The Dragon In Footscray (review)
August 24th 2008 22:57
Alright skanks, how they hanging?
I’ve got some reviews coming up, been out to a few flash places and gotten quite lazy. So we’ll start with the Station Hotel Footscray.
Now I know what some people are thinking... Footscray? Yep it used to be known as the scum hole of Melbourne. If you want to meet “Harry” or take a ride on a “Horse” then Footscray was the place you wanted to be.
So what makes this place the diamond in the rough? That’s right, the chef. He used to work at the Botanical (some la-di-da place) and you could say has a pedigree well above the usual scum that cook in Footscray. It’s a pub atmosphere but without the pub food. You won’t find a chicken parma here, they do a huge range of Black Angus Steaks cooked exactly the way you want.
Starters
Oysters (St Helens TAS, Coffin Bay SA & Smoky Bay) $3 each
French onion soup with Gruyere crouton $10
Provencale fish soup $10

Marinated ocean trout, blood oranges, beets and roasted almonds $12.50
Salt and pepper calamari, radicchio and fennel $15

Pumpkin and ricotta gnocchi, tomatoes, black cabbage and salsa verde $24

500g Darling Downs (QLD) grass fed Black Angus t-bone $32
500g Darling Downs (QLD) grass fed Black Angus rib eye $38
All served with hand cut chips and bearnaise sauce

and fried duck egg $22

Valrhona chocolate mousse with griottines and kirsch $12
Pear clafoutis with vanilla ice-cream $12
Coconut rice pudding, pineapple, toasted almonds and hot mint $12
Sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce $12
Bread and butter pudding $12
Check it out not a chicken dish anywhere, which I think is good. It weeds out the scum, because all scum love chicken.
Alright people this service was excellent, as soon as we sat down our drink orders were taken and a loaf of bread placed on the table, quickly followed by a bottle of water. I hate to ask for water.
We were eating quite late and the five of us were quite hungry so when we had finished our bread, without a word another loaf was put on the table.
Now when your steaks come out they are all served with béarnaise sauce, then a waitress comes round with a selection of mustards (hot English, Dijon and seeded) to compliment the steaks, which they did.
After our meal we were back out to the front bar for a friendly game of pool. Just a warning, if you eat in the front bar you may encounter a junkie. They may want to play pool against you, even if you’re not holding the table, then he will fumble around for his money and then your mate will say “ look mate if ya cant find ya money, me and me mate will play again (cos your junkie brain aint workin’ fast enough).
They call this pub a “Gastro Pub” or “Gastronomic Pub” which I think sounds a bit poofy, so we’ll call it a “Pub with good food”.
